Let's engage girls in tech
Girls are often not interested in tech because WE MAKE IT BORING FOR THEM.
Technology is becoming part of our everyday lives more and more and 9 out of 10 new jobs will require digital skills.
And, we guess you already know that.
You have also probably heard that girls don’t really like technology that much. Is that true? If it is, you for sure wonder will it affect their future?
Most education materials, tech toys, books, and movies are made with boys in mind, so sometimes it can be difficult to find anything different.
Googling won’t help.
Nor will you find your answer on Amazon:
But, this newsletter will provide you with suggestions. A lot of them.
It is already widely known fact that we are more likely to engage in tasks that we believe we can perform successfully.
This is why we need to have more diverse ways of attracting girls to tech, including learning coding and robotics. Cars are cool, but not everybody likes them.
Various research has pointed out that access to different resources is the key to attracting girls to male-stereotyped fields such as computing.
What will you get?
We are starting a free weekly newsletter to suggest fun content, activities, and products that will engage girls' interest in technology.
We’ll recommend:
Fun activities to do with a detailed tutorial,
Things you can make, also with a step-by-step guide,
Movies and videos to watch,
Books to read,
Ways to entertain and teach several girls at once, for activities with friends,
Great resources (websites, organizations, social media channels, etc.) to follow.
Some of which you can do in 5 minutes or less.
Our principles
These are our guiding rules, based on the knowhow of The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), and we will help you to become yours as well:
Bunch of role models! We will help girls envision success by seeing other girls and women in tech. But we will be careful to choose ones that show girls and women and a positive message, not ones that talk about the lack of women in the field or the need for more, as the research has shown that it can have the opposite effect.
Spark the interest early and often — This should come naturally and we will give you tips and tricks to make sure “technology” is not just one more thing they are learning, but that it is part of our everyday lives.
Get other girls onboard — Kids lookup to their friends and in this newsletter we will provide you with suggestions of activities you can do in a group
Connecting technology with other interests — Technology is already in everything we do, so be sure to point it out and connect it with their other interests such as pets, art, music, health, or sports.
Extra tip: Don’t be afraid to learn yourself! Ask her: “I wonder how they did that?”
